Pausing in American English

Jul 08, 2022

In today's post, I'll talk about the relationship between Focus Words, Flow, and Pausing to help you build confident communication. By the end, you'll have a better idea of what makes for a great American English Speaker.

Video Transcript:

Jill: Hello Costy! So here we go…

This is the wine enthusiasts and this is just one version. Okay, so here's the paragraph, then I started to create my thought chunks with the slash marks, which are the silences.

And then I started to identify what are the, the focus words. And then in the final version I made them bold and I'm going to read it for you.

Remember you can create a different version and that's really important that you do that, that you start to do that. But I understand that you want to mimic me and here I am.

Okay, so here we go.

Wine enthusiasts can teach us a lot about speech. A good conversation is like a bottle of great wine because it's smooth. From the moment the bottle is opened, you can tell it's gonna be good.

Same with an effective dialogue. The time you have to wait for the wines' flavors to develop once it's opened, is similar to the silence you must have while someone is talking. It takes patience.

And finally, a good bottle of wine is better when it is shared. Think about the conversations you have as something you are sharing. It involves speaking and listening.

Now, I may have added a little pause up here somewhere, but again, that was my instinct coming out. But the idea here is that you start to see a really nice variation in the length of each of the thought chunks, where the focus word is, how long the pauses are.

Okay? And when I'm using these continuation marks, it's like I'm almost holding the sound a little bit, right?

So listen, it's like a bottle of great wine because it's smooth. So I'm kind of really pulling that out, kinda like, "Hey, I'm not done with my thought", but I'm going to pause because I have skill, right?

So try reading it.

Good luck. I'll see you soon. Bye.
